Pulse exhibition in the news

Heath McCoy of the Calgary Herald wrote a feature article on the Alberta Society of Artists and the Pulse exhibition on now at the Triangle Gallery. You can read the article from the Calgary Herald website: Artistic differences: Tensions and debates have fueled growth in Alberta Society of Artists for 80 years.

I am told there will be some reviews coming up from different writers. I look forward to what they have to say on the exhibition, which I still haven’t been able to get to. I had hoped to go this week, but have ended up catching the flu virus that was going around in Mexico. I was also supposed to be in Edmonton today, but had to postpone that trip until Wednesday. Maybe next week I’ll get to Calgary.

New Members Opening

New Members Show
Opening reception at the New Members - New Work show.

The opening for the Alberta Society of Artist’s, New Members – New Work art show was held Sunday afternoon at the ASA Gallery at Lougheed House in Calgary, Alberta. The title “new members” referred to artist members who were juried into the association in the spring of 2009, not members who were just juried in the past month. The show was successfully curated by Errol Lee Fullen, who is also one of the new members for 2009. The show was well attended. The work was inspiring and it was a pleasure to have an afternoon to talk art with both the public and other members of the association. It is these kinds of activities which really fuels the creative fires!

Alberta Society Of Artist's New Members Show Invitation

The Alberta Society Of Artist’s New Members – New Work show opens today. The official opening is Sunday, April 25th from 1 to 3 PM at Lougheed House, 707 – 13 Ave SW, Calgary. I will be present for the opening and invite you to come down and say hello. I know there will be some absolutely fantastic work by some of Alberta’s top artist’s.

Endeavor Arts Opening

There was a tremendous turnout for Friday nights opening of the new contemporary arts space in Calgary, Endeavor Arts. I was happy to be participating along with fellow artists, Nikki Gour, Lisa Heinricks, and Ron Robinson.

The buzz was electric, as the large crowd was treated to a delicious assortment of appetizers, wines, and great art. It was great to be able to talk to people about my work and explain a bit about the process. Along with the printed pieces were digital displays on monitors. People seemed to enjoy the varied imagery presented in the slideshows.

Endeavor Arts owners, Maria and Shannon Hoover, along with their partners, have worked hard in creating this contemporary arts space in one of Calgary’s  heritage buildings. If you are in the city make sure to stop in and say hello, check out my work (maybe even buy a piece!), and sign up for their mailing list for future events.

Endeavor Arts

There’s a new kid in town. With town being Calgary, and the kid being a contemporary art gallery. Endeavor Arts is newly opened for business in the historic Victoria Crossing neighborhood in downtown Calgary.

Being more than just a contemporary art gallery, Endeavor Arts is an upscale event space that may be booked for corporate functions, weddings, cocktail parties and other important events where an elegant location is called for.

Along with traditional 2D artwork gracing the walls of the gallery, large LCD screens broadcast digital art from which prints can be ordered, which transform the gallery into a technological leader in the city. Proving they are more than just innovators in the Calgary art scene, Endeavor Arts is also showing they have incredibly good taste as they represent a selection of my work! ;-)

A formal opening of this new contemporary Calgary art gallery is scheduled for March 5th. More details will be forthcoming. In the meantime why not stop in and say hello and see some of my work in person!

First Friday’s

I was pleased to be able to participate in my first, of what I hope is many, First Friday events in Red Deer, with the reception for my Land Of Possibility show at the Harris-Warke gallery. First Friday’s are special openings and events at local arts venues in Red Deer that happen on the first Friday of the month. The Red Deer Advocate’s staff reporter, Randy Fiedler, made the round of gallery events and put together the above video. My work is featured at the end. I am so happy to know most of the people involved in the arts in Red Deer; and often find myself wishing I lived in the city so I could be a more activate participant and take in the events more often.

I am pleased with the turn out for the show and wish to thank everyone for their support. Special thanks go out to the Harris-Warke committee members, especially Paul Boultbee, Janet, Jillian, and Peter; and to the good folks at Sunworks (the best retail shop in the city) – Paul Harris, Terry Warke, Payton, and Leslie.

The Land of Possibility show runs until February 19th.

Land Of Possibility Exhibition

For those that asked for pictures of the show at the Harris-Warke gallery in Red Deer. Here you go…. It’s a quick stitch of 3 images from my little point&shoot camera. It’s not well done in a large version, but good enough to give you an idea of what the show looks like. There are 3 more pieces that aren’t shown.

Land Of Possibility Exhibition

Land Of Possibility Postcard

The Land Of Possibility show opens tomorrow morning at the Harris Warke gallery in Red Deer. The show runs for a full month, ending February 19th. The artist’s reception will be February 5th as part of First Friday’s, Red Deer’s monthly gallery crawl event.

We hung the show yesterday and it looked good, if I can say so myself. There were already people poking their heads in and coming in to see the images, so I am encouraged it will be a very successful show. Do stop in if you have a chance.

Act Of Choice

Wasted Days

A Group Photography Exhibit
August 15 to September 12, 2009

Opening Reception
Saturday August 15. 2009 2:00 – 4:00 PM, artists in attendance.

Local, provincial and national professional and emerging photographers showcase this underutilized medium of fine art photography. Eight photographers will show us how they perceive the world around them and of their imagination, in this thought-provoking exhibit. From historical depictions to modern graffiti, this exhibit delves into the choices a photographer makes when choosing their subject matter. What is beauty to one person is ugly to another. But what photographers choose to portray also reveals their personality – or does it? You be the judge!

Calgary Stampede Western Art Show

Far From Nowhere, originally uploaded by Uncommon Depth.

I’m pleased to announce that I will once again be participating in the Calgary Stampede’s Western Art show. I have had 5 images chosen for their Western Photo Gallery section. This will be one of the prints available during the 10 days of the Stampede. You can visit the Western Art Gallery in the Round Up Centre starting July 1st, 2009 for their invitational Showcase Stir Up gala; and then from July 3rd – 13th during the regular Stampede hours.

In total I’ll be taking 20 prints down to Calgary. One of the requirements of participating in this show is you have to supply them with 2 framed prints, and 2 matted prints of each image in the show.

Looking Glass

I am home from our brief trip up to Edmonton to attend the opening of my Looking Glass show at the Visual Arts Alberta gallery at Harcourt House. The opening went well with a fairly good turnout considering the cold. I need to send a thanks to Scott Hayes at the St. Albert Gazette for his review of the show. (The link is for a pdf of the full paper – a large download. The review is on page 18.)

Looking Glass

Looking Glass: Leon Strembitsky & Roberta Murray
February 19 to March 21, 2009
Opening Reception: Thursday, February 26, 2009, 7:00pm to 9:30pm

Photographer Leon Strembitsky works primarily in black and white. Most of his images are manipulated and often times are quite different from what a literal translation of the scene would show. Photographer Roberta Murray created a series of images of a mystical nature where low tech and high tech merge to form a surreal world. Reality and how we perceive our world are questioned.

Planet Earth

The Alberta Society Of Artists brings Planet Earth to the Leighton Art Centre from March 14 – April 11, 2009. Planet Earth will showcase artwork that addresses artists concerns about the survival of our planet, as part of the International Year of Planet Earth.
Opening reception March 21, 2009 from 2 – 4 PM.

I have The Sun Never Rises printed on handmade Japanese washi paper in this exhibit. This print was also chosen to be part of the 20 piece traveling exhibition which will tour the province over a 2 year period.
